About Givenchy Designer

Hubert James Taffin de Givenchy was born in Beauvais, France in 1927. His father died when he was young, and he was brought up by his grandfather, an artist and expert tapestry maker. In 1944 Givenchy joined Jacques Fath, and worked with him while studying at the Ecole de Beaux Arts part time. After a year, he joined Robert Piguet and then Lucien Lelong. In 1950 he joined Elsa Schiaparelli where his bright youthful separates enchanted her clientele.

In 1952 Givenchy opened his own house at 8, rue Alfred de Vigny, near the Parc Monceau. Here he presented his first collection. Since he had no money to buy large amounts of costly fabrics, he relied solely on his designs and presented the entire collection made up from white cotton mens shirting material. He named the collection Bettina after Bettina Graziani who was Paris' top model and handled his publicity. The blouse on the right is called the "Bettina Blouse" from 1952. The collection was a great success, and widely copied, earning him worldwide recognition

 Givenchy style

For 43 years, Hubert de Givenchy has been the perfect gentleman of couture. He has dressed a clientele from young debutante to dowager in styles elegant, pure, sculptural, refreshing, lady-like and addictive. His clients are women for whom elegance is everything. Givenchy is the last bastion of quality.

Ladies dressed by him include Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Duchess of Windsor, Gloria Guiness, Bunny Mellon, Mercedes Kellog and actress Capucine (formerly a Givenchy model).

The client most associated with Givenchy was Audrey Hepburn. She first met him when she was a young awkward teenager and he dressed her all her life as an elegant beautiful movie star and wonderful human being. She was one of the icons of the 50's and 60's, always immaculately dressed, always elegant.

Givenchy introduced his perfume L'Interdit in January 1957 but allowed only Audrey to use it for a whole year, only allowing it into the market in December. He designed clothes for her films "Funny Face", "Breakfast at Tiffanys" and others. He designed clothes for a total of 10 films in all.

Balenciaga influence

Balenciaga had long been an idol to Givenchy and in 1953 he actually met him. They became friends and Balenciaga worked with him continuously to help Givenchy mature as a couturier. Balenciaga taught him how to minimize, how to avoid unnecessary detail, how to be involved in shape and colour.

In 1955 and 1957 he showed straight dresses with bloused back, and sheaths which barely touched the figure. These were pioneers of the "sack" dress later to be so popular.

Both Givenchy and Balenciaga banned the press from their collections in 1957, and as a result they appeared in the fashion magazines a month later than all the other couturiers.

In later years, Givenchy's clothes for day and evening became simpler, highlighted by his characteristic bright cheerful colours. He used gazar, heavy glazed linens, silk broadcloth, gabardine and cloque textured silks.

In 1961, President Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline, made a state visit to France. They are shown here with French President Charles de Gaulle. Mrs. Kennedy wore a dress designed by Givenchy for this occasion. It was cream silk with an embroidered bodice.

In 1968 Givenchy opened his own boutique called Givenchy Nouvelle Boutique and here he introduced his pret-a-porter (ready to wear) line and through this, he introduced his "fun" clothes, leopard-printed pantsuits, brushed denim skirts with orange stitching. He kept pace with the colourful 60's while not sacrificing elegance.

In the early 70's he designed clothes with appliques inspired by Miro, Braque or Rothko. He also used handsewn kiss appliques and zebra stripes, gilt python trenchcoats, suede jackets and skirts in jewel colours with gem stones stitched on. All through the 80's and 90's Givenchy continued to present his elegant and lady-like fashions to a faithful clientele.

Givenchy continued all through the 80's and early 90's designing his elegant classical dresses, for a faithful clientele. His methods did not change. He always wore a white coat given to him by his mentor Balenciaga years ago.

However in 1988, Givenchy sold his house to LVMH (Bernard Arnault), who also own the houses of Dior, Lacroix, Celine and Kenzo. Arnault pressured Hubert Givenchy hard to retire. Finally, he did so in 1995. This was a real shock to the fashion world, and especially the loyal clients who had always bought gowns from Givenchy. Also he was only 68, comparatively young by design standards, and in the best of health but he retired to his mansion and garden outside Paris.

Catherine Join-Dieterle wrote a memorable book "Givenchy : 40 years of creation" which covers his whole life in fashion. It is out of print at present, but keep a look out for it at Amazon, it is well worth reading.

In 1995 John Galliano was called in and presented two collections for Givenchy which were very well received, albeit they were a little flamboyant for the rather sedate house of Givenchy, but the new owners wanted to create some excitement. He did however, keep to the elegance of the house and even called one beautiful black dress "Audrey" in remembrance of Givenchy's favorite client.

The next year Galliano was moved to Dior, also owned by Arnault, and Alexander MacQueen was brought in to head Givenchy from 1997.

McQueen's fall collection for 1998 for Givenchy, had as the basic theme the style of the 1982 Science Fiction film "Blade Runner." The heroine of the film, wore her hair in a big frontal puff and 40's style straight slinky dresses. These McQueen has adapted for his collection. He has added embroidery and elegance, which he says is a homage to the master Givenchy.
